5-Day Basic Wetland Delineation Course

About the Course Dates Registration Hotel Info FAQ's

Introduction

Jurisdictional Delineation of Wetlands in Minnesota is a technically rigorous course with emphasis on a "hands-on" approach during all phases of lecture and field instruction. Field and classroom discussions will focus on a range of representative Minnesota wetland types of varied complexity. Field sites will include fresh water marshes, riparian forests, cropland, farmed wetlands, scrub-shrub wetlands, and peatlands. Participants will work closely with instructors to develop knowledge of the United States Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual (January 1987) in a course that is tailored for wetlands in Minnesota. Given the moderate class size, participants can hone existing wetland delineation skills or develop and apply new skills. Participants will receive printed materials that will be used throughout the sessions as well as many additional references for future wetland delineations.

The Professional and In-Training exam will be offered at the conclusion of each of the training sessions. If you wish to take either of these exams please include an exam application with your training registration.

***REGISTRATION FOR THE COURSE AND THE EXAM ARE SEPERATE! IF YOU WISH TO REGISTER FOR THE EXAM IN ADDITION TO THE COURSE, OR WISH TO REGISTER FOR THE EXAM ALONE PLEASE OBTAIN THE EXAM EVENT ID'S HERE.***

This course will account for 30 hours of continuing education based on the WDCP criteria.

About the Course

This course provides participants with a comprehensive lecture and field-based introduction to delineation of jurisdictional wetlands in Minnesota. The technical foundation for the course is the United States Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineations Manual (January 1987) and regional supplements. To accomplish the overall training objective, specific segments of the course will focus on:

  • Recognition and description of hydrology indicators and field indicators
  • Identification and characterization of hydric soil field indicators
  • Identification and characterization of plant communities and hydrophytic plant criteria for delineation of wetlands in Minnesota
  • Synthesis of hydrology, soils and plant community information for jurisdictional delineation of relatively pristine as well as highly altered wetlands in Minnesota consistent with the 1987 Manual
  • Field and administrative techniques for documentation and/or presentation of wetland delineations
  • Changes to the 1987 Manual resulting from efforts to regionalize the 1987 Manual.
