Certification Process Overview

Wetland delineators in the state of Minnestoa are not required to be certified, although certification brings with it a variety of benefits to the delineator, their organizations, clients and projects. Certification is proof that the practicing expert has a well-rounded combination of both classroom and in-field training and maintians up-to-date knowledge on delineation subject matter by completing continuing education requirements biennially.

Application and Registration

Please note that completion of a basic four or five day wetland delineation course alone does not satisfy requirements to become certified. Exams are offered on Friday of the 5-Day Basic Wetland Delineation trainings; however, exam registration is not included with the course.  One must APPLY FOR, COMPLETE, AND PASS a certification exam.  

The following three steps are necessary to complete the certification process:

  1. Review the Certification Criteria (.pdf)
  2. Apply and be approved for certification before taking the exam.

To apply, please complete and mail the appropriate application form to the address listed at the bottom of the form. Emailed or faxed applications are also acceptable. You will receive an email confirming your application has been accepted or denied. Please note: if you are re-taking a certification exam there is no need for you to fill out a new application; simply re-register for the exam date of your choice.

3. After recieving approval for certification, please register for an exam session of your choice. You will receive an email confirming your exam registration once your exam registration form and payment have been received.

A $30 processing fee will be withheld from a registration if a person cancels, in writing, up to three business days prior to the exam. Any cancellations after that point will not be refunded. Test dates may be transferred one time, within at least 5 business days of the exam, without penalty.

* Registration online is placed through learning.umn.edu, any questions with login/passwords should be directed to the number or email on the homepage of that site.

2017 Exam Fees

In-Training

  • Exam Fee: $100
  • Re-test Fee: $50
  • Biennial fee to maintain certification: $40

Professional

  • Exam Fee: $200
  • Re-test Fee: $100
  • Biennial fee to maintain certification: $140

Please note both In-Training and Professional exams are given at the same time and locations. The time listed is the actual start time of the exam. We recommend you arrive 20 minutes early to ensure you are checked-in and can begin on time. Late arrivals will not be allotted extra time to take the examination.

Exam Policies
A $30 processing fee will be assessed if you cancel up to three working days by 4:30 pm prior to any session. Any cancellation after these dates will forfeit the entire registration fee. Cancellation requests must be submitted vial email, mail, or fax.

A $20 fee will be added to any returned checks.

As of 7/1/2011: Any writing or marking on an exam will be subject to a $25 office and administrative fee. If the fee goes unpaid, no further testing will be allowed until the balance is zero.
